Down by the River is a northern version of Olive A. Wadsworth's classic nursery poem "Over in the Meadow", which was based on a traditional Appalachian counting rhyme. From Mother Moose with her single calf, to Mother Mink with her little kits ten, young children will want to hear this wonderful read-aloud again and again. As children sing or recite the verses, they learn to count and learn more about Alaska plants, fish, and animals.  The book also includes Baby Animal Facts pages, lists identifying plants and animals shown, and the piano music/guitar chords so you can sing along.  Read the reviews written by an Alaska Librarian of the Year and a popular Alaska author. Down by the River was selected by school librarians from around the state for the 2001 kindergarten Reading List of the  Battle of the Books reading competition.
